چکیده

SHADES is a new, major, extragalactic sub-mm survey currently being undertaken with SCUBA on the JCMT. The aim of this survey is to map 0.5 square degrees of sky at a depth sufficient to provide the first, major (≃ 300 source), unbiased sample of bright (S850 ≃ 8 mJy) sub-mm sources. Combined with extensive multi-frequency supporting observations already in hand, we aim to measure the redshift distribution, clustering and AGN content of the sub-mm population. Currently ≃ 40% complete, the survey is due to run until early 2006. Here I provide some early example results which demonstrate the potential power of our combined data set, and highlight a series of forthcoming papers which will present results based on the current interim sample of ≃ 130 850μm sources detected within the Lockman Hole and SXDF SHADES survey fields.

The extragalactic submillimetre population: predictions for the SCUBA Half-Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES)

We present predictions for the angular correlation function and redshift distribution for SHADES, the SCUBA Half-Degree Extragalactic Survey, which will yield a sample of around 300 submillimetre sources in the 850-μm waveband in two separate fields. Complete and unbiased photometric redshift information on these submillimetre sources will be derived by combining the SCUBA data with (i) deep ra...

The SCUBA HAlf Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES) is a major new blank-field extragalactic sub-mm survey currently underway at the James Clerk Maxwell telescope. Ultimately, SHADES aims to cover half a square degree at 450 and 850μm to a 4-σ depth of ≃ 8mJy at 850μm. Two fields are being observed, the Subaru/XMM– Newton Deep Field (SXDF) (0218−05) and the Lockman Hole East (1052+57). The surv...

The AGN fraction of submm-selected galaxies and contributions to the submm/mm-wave extragalactic background light

We present a comparison of the SCUBA half degree extragalactic survey (SHADES) at 450 μm, 850 μm and 1100 μm with deep guaranteed time 15 μm AKARI FU-HYU survey data and Spitzer guaranteed time data at 3.6−24 μm in the Lockman hole east. The AKARI data was analysed using bespoke software based in part on the drizzling and minimum-variance matched filtering developed for SHADES, and was cross-ca...

We have measured the contribution of submillimeter and mid-infrared sources to the extragalactic background radiation at 70 and 160μm. Specifically, we have stacked flux in 70 and 160μm Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer) observations of the Canada-UK Deep Sub-millimeter Survey 14h field at the positions of 850μm sources detected by SCUBA and also 8 and 24μm sources detected by Spitzer. We find t...
